There will be STA picket lines in front of all of our work sites starting tomorrow Sept 2, 2014.
Three of us will be taking our support picketing packages to all the sites by 8:00 am tomorrow morning at which time we will seek and appoint picket captains.Shane Power will be in the north zone, Nathan Stevens in the central zone and Dean in the south. DO NOT sign in if you are not doing picket duty.
We all qualify for strike pay until our contract is ratified by BCPSEA. No word yet as to when that might be but hopefully prior to processing of the current pay period.
For processing ease please use one sign in/out sheet per day at each site. Print your name clearly and use the same name each day. It is very counterproductive for us to process strike pay for R. Smith, Bob Smith and Robert Smith if they are all the same person.
As this is likely to be a long strike I strongly advise on-call members to get in their picketing shifts so you can reach the 300 dollar per week strike pay level. That would be from the 10th day and beyond that you do picket duty, 20 hours per week. This is a continuation of the same BCTF job action that started in May/June and August of this year. All picketing shifts done since the first strike day in May count towards the 10 days that bring you to the $75 per day level of strike pay.
This portion is advice not direction. Our employer has let me know that their expectation of all of us is that we report for work each day on time to see if picket lines are there. Not convenient for us, but I can assure you that it is reasonable for them to expect this of us. You may be on the picket line prior to your start time but I advise you all to overlap or end your picket duty with your regular start time.
I have been told that in the Sooke district principals and managers have started taking attendance of CUPE staff each day. I have had no indication that Saanich will follow suit nor has the employer sent out a communique to their CUPE staff expressing their expectations.
